Abstract:

Article reviews the literature on pre- and post-injury substance use patterns, abuse risk factors, and dangers of post-injury use among individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The relationship between substance abuse and neurological, neurobehavioral, vocational, and life satisfaction outcomes is examined. Assessment is discussed in detail, including the importance of a review of the medical records, use of standardized measures, and identification of abuse risk factors and subtle signs of abuse. Information is also provided on treatment, prevention, and education and the role of psychologists in substance abuse evaluation and treatment. Article concludes by addressing a number of issue, questions, and concerns commonly encountered by clinicians.
