Abstract:

Study conducted to examine the utility, reliability, and validity of the Loss Inventory (LI), which was designed to measure symptoms unique to grief following the onset of disability. A prospective survey was conducted in which two self-report measures, the LI and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, were administered to 103 hospitalized rehabilitation clients. The quantitative results of the study are outlined and discussed. The authors found that the rehabilitation clients sampled in the study were no more likely to be depressed than individuals in the general population. Grief symptoms reported following functional losses were found to be similar to those reported by people who have experienced the death of a loved one. The LI was found to accurately and reliably measure those grief symptoms.
