Abstract:

Article on the early prediction of functional outcome following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The article first surveys outcome measures, including the Disability Rating Scale (DRS), Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ), and return to work and school. It then discusses the functional predictive value of acute factors after TBI, including trauma scoring systems of injury severity, coma and amnesia, and neurophysiologic parameters, and of premorbid and demographic characteristics, including age, sex, minority status, whether the injury was due to intentional behavior, substance abuse, and other premorbid factors.
