The University of Pittsburgh Model Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Program (UPMC-TBI) reflects a greater than $15 million institutional commitment, extraordinary facilities and a dedication to patient care and research. UPMC-TBI’s continuum of care spans the time from the emergency response scene through community reintegration. The rich research resources available within the UPMC-TBI system has allowed us to create a Rehabilomic® approach to conducting research. Rehabilomics® is a concept developed by our multidisciplinary team to describe a personalized approach to rehabilitation research, where the full range of individual biological characteristics is examined to determine which characteristics impact recovery and the nature of this impact. Essentially, this neurobiologically grounded concept provides an “-omic” overlay to the scientific study of rehabilitation processes and outcomes–personalizing the approach to rehabilitation aimed at optimizing individual recovery.
