Abstract:
Article explores the application of ambiguous loss theory as it relates to traumatic brain injury (TBI), to better understand and enhance families’ emotional adjustment. Ambiguous loss is a theoretical framework that helps account for the drastic impact of TBI on family well-being. The authors present a brief overview of TBI, review the literature examining ambiguous loss in families after TBI, discuss the relevance of ambiguous loss to family treatment, and explore existing, empirically supported family intervention strategies that incorporate ambiguous loss theory.
