Hillary Hartnett’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Journey

Hillary Hartnett lives with traumatic brain injury and continues to navigate a wide range of ongoing symptoms, including challenges with multitasking and short‑term memory, chronic fatigue, sleep difficulties, sensory loss and numbness, loss of taste and smell, medication side effects, and focal seizures. These challenges have shaped her daily life and required constant adaptation.

Hillary manages her recovery by staying engaged with research, maintaining a positive mental outlook, and using technology as a reliable support in her day‑to‑day life. Over time, she has learned that living well with TBI requires self‑advocacy and intention. She believes it is essential to take an active role in healthcare and therapy, beginning with everyday choices and lifestyle. Hillary emphasizes the importance of perseverance, committing fully to recovery, and surrounding oneself with people who recognize and value personal strengths.

Her contributions to the TBI community focus on connection and awareness. Hillary leads weekly support groups in two states, has written a book about her lived experience and recovery, and publishes regularly on Substack. She also creates videos addressing mental health and TBI‑related topics and remains involved in research through the Kessler Foundation, helping inform care for current and future individuals with TBI.
