Abstract:
Case control study identifies and quantifies factors associated with discharge to a nursing home from a cohort of 16,633 consecutively discharged patients with spinal cord injuries between 1973 and 1996. Overall, 4.3% of patients were discharged to a nursing home. Factors that were significantly associated (p<.0001 with="" placement="" were="" age="" race="" employment="" status="" at="" injury="" bladder="" management="" method="" discharge="" education="" level="" marital="" frankel="" grade="" functional="" independence="" in="" performing="" activities="" of="" daily="" living="" independent="" ambulation="" geographic="" region="" neurologic="" ventilator="" dependency="" and="" third-party="" sponsor="" rehabilitation.="" a="" multivariate="" predictive="" model="" was="" developed="" from="" these="" factors="" both="" sensitive="" specific="" identifying="" patients="" who="" discharged="" to="" nursing="" home.="" the="" discussion="" explores="" recent="" increase="" home="" discharges="" effects="" change="" case="" mix="" as="" well="" significance="" individual="" validity="" models.="">
