The University of Alabama at Birmingham Spinal Cord Injury Model System (UAB-SCIMS) has been a SCIMS since 1972. The UAB-SCIMS operates within the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which is located at Spain Rehabilitation Center in the UAB Hospital complex. Here it establishes and maintains links with emergency medical service agencies throughout the state, with state vocational rehabilitation and long-term follow-up programs.
