The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) is pleased to announce a new suite of free resources on safe wheelchair transfer and wheelchair maintenance. These resources were developed in collaboration with University of Pittsburgh and the American Institutes for Research with funding (grant numbers: 90DP0082, 90DP0078 and 90SI5014) from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research, Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Please access these free research-based resources below and share them with others in your networks.

Safe Wheelchair Transfer Training Course

This training will teach you how to move to and from your wheelchair and help you to prevent wear and tear on your body. It is designed for manual and power wheelchair users and anyone interested in learning about a three-phase technique for safe wheelchair transfers.

Safe Independent Wheelchair Transfers Infographics

This infographic series teaches how to transfer in and out of a wheelchair safely in three simple steps. Learning how to transfer correctly can protect the user’s arms and shoulders.

Wheelchair Maintenance Training

This training helps you to identify issues with your wheelchair so you can keep yourself safe and better manage the cost of wheelchair repairs. The three parts of this training cover. You will also practice inspecting your own wheelchair and if needed make minor repairs. There are three parts to this training: (1) Maintenance Basics (2) Inspection (3) Action Items.

Estimated completion time is 90-130 minutes. You can start and stop this training as you go, so that you can review it at times when convenient for you.
