The role of cognition in predicting activities of daily living and ambulation functioning in the oldest old rehabilitation patients

Abstract:

Reports the results of a study of 60 consecutive patients aged 85 or older admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation program, to determine if demographic, medical, cognitive, or affective variables could predict ambulation or Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores, taken to reflect performance of activities of daily living (ADL). Only the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) scores correlated significantly with both ambulation and ADL skills, though female gender was positively related to ADL skills. DRS scores accounted for 8% of ADL variance and 16% of ambulation variance, above and beyond that accounted for by demographic and medical variables.
