Abstract:

Reports the results of a study investigating the roles that depression and cognition play in the recovery of ambulation and the performance of activities of daily living (ADL) in geriatric patients undergoing physical rehabilitation. Subjects consisted of 423 medical rehabilitation inpatients between the ages of 60 and 99. Depression and cognition at admission were found to be significantly related to performance of ADL and ambulation at admission and discharge. Furthermore, depression and cognition combined to account for 7% of the discharge ADL variance unaccounted for by admission ADL functioning, demographic variables, and number of existing medical conditions. However, the level of depression and quality of cognitive abilities did not predict ambulation at discharge in a regression model.
