Abstract:

Study evaluated the degree to which medical rehabilitation research papers published in 1997 and 1998 provided evidence of the reliability, validity, and other clinimetric qualities of the outcome measured used in the studies. The 171 papers identified included 651 outcome measures. Reliability information was provided for 20.1 percent of those measures and validity information for 6.9 percent. Evidence for any type of reliability based on newly collected data was offered for only 7.7 percent of measures and for validity the corresponding figure was 0.6 percent. Results highlight the need to use measures that produce reliable and valid data as well as the need for research reports that include information on the reliability and validity of the data.
