Personality factors and injury severity in the prediction of early and late traumatic brain injury outcomes

Abstract:

Study examined the impact of preinjury personality and injury severity on early rehabilitation outcome and on outcome approximately 1 year after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Sixty-nine people with TBI and their significant others were asked to describe the preinjury personality of the injured person using the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Measures of injury severity included the Glasgow Coma Scale and duration of posttraumatic amnesia. Overall, results showed that personality ratings did not predict early or late rehabilitation outcome as represented by the need for supervision, independent living, and employment reintegration. However, self-ratings of depression did contribute to the prediction of both early and late outcome.
