Abstract:

Article describes the development and content of Participation Objective, Participation Subjective (POPS), a new measure of community integration that incorporates both objective and subjective aspects of participation. Participation refers to engagement in activities that are either intrinsically social, part of household or other occupational role functioning, or recreational activities occurring in community settings. The POPS a subject to indicate whether he or she wants to perform more, the same, or less of the activity, and the importance of the activity to well-being. It generates 2 measures: an objective component (PO) and a subjective component (PS) that reflects the individual's perspective. A total of 454 community-dwelling subjects with traumatic brain injury (TBI) completed the POPS, as well as measures of quality of life, depression, and TBI symptoms. Initial evaluations showed that test-retest reliability for the PO and the PS scores was weak to adequate with PS components having better reliability. The PS component scores had the expected correlations with TBI symptoms, depressed mood, and life satisfaction. Injury severity and time since onset were not related to PO or PS scores.
