Abstract:

Study investigated the effects of aging on recovery after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The functional outcomes in older patients (ages 50 to 89) and younger patients (ages 18 to 49) with TBI were compared with those of an age-matched group of people with orthopedic injuries. Outcomes examined were independent living status, employment status, and level of functioning 1 to 2 years after injury. Analysis revealed that both age and type of injury have an effect on recovery after trauma. Older patients and those with TBI were more likely to have increased dependence after injury. Older patients with TBI were more likely to have changes in employment status compared with patients with orthopedic injury or younger patients with TBI. Injury severity was only mildly predictive of outcome.
