Abstract:

Article discusses findings from a study of the incidence, and risk factors, and outcomes of patients with fecal incontinence who were admitted to inpatient rehabilitation at a Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) center. Relationships between fecal incontinence and demographic, injury severity, and functional outcome variables were examined using analysis of variance. The incidence of fecal incontinence was 68 percent at admission to rehabilitation, 12.4 percent at rehabilitation discharge, and 5.2 percent at 1-year follow-up. Several factors were found to be associated with a greater likelihood of bowel incontinence including increased age and greater injury severity.
