Abstract:

Study examined the impact of acute and sub-acute care medications on cognitive and motor recovery outcomes during inpatient rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury. Data was abstracted from the medical records of 182 patients regarding the presence of 11 categories of medication, 3 measures of injury severity, and 3 measures of outcome: the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) motor and cognitive scores and duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). The 3 most common categories of medications (narcotics, benzodiazepines, and neuroleptics) appeared to have no significant effect on the FIM outcome variables. The neuroleptics affected cognitive recovery with almost 7 more days required to clear PTA in the neuroleptic treated group. The results suggest that the used of neuroleptics during the acute stage of recovery has a negative impact on recovery of cognitive function at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation.
