Abstract:

Study compares demographics, injury characteristics, quantity and intensity or rehabilitation services provided, and outcome in minority versus nonminority patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Minorities were more likely to be young, single men, unemployed, and less well educated. Motor vehicle crashes were the major cause of injury for both groups; however, minorities were more likely to sustain injury from acts of violence and pedestrian crashes. Rehabilitation charges, discharge disposition, and postinjury employment status were similar for the 2 groups, although rehabilitation length of stay is typically 3 to 4 days shorter for minorities. Minorities tended to receive fewer therapy services of all types.
