Abstract:

Article reports on a study to determine the prevalence and type of sleep disorders following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Sleep disturbance information was gathered from 86 subjects one year after discharge from a rehabilitation facility. Fifty percent of the subjects had difficulty sleeping; 64 percent described waking up too early; 25 percent described sleeping more than usual, and 45 percent had problems with falling asleep. Eighty percent of subjects with sleep problems also reported problems with fatigue. The more severe the injury, the less likely the individual reported a sleep disturbance. Sleep difficulties were found to be more like when the person is female, older, and has an alcohol abuse history. This document is included in NCDDR's Guide to Traumatic Brain Injury Resources Produced by NIDRR Grantees, number C.15.
