Abstract:
Study compared the functional outcomes of 6,975 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted to 21 Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) rehabilitation centers from 1999 to 2008. Patient outcomes were measured using the Functional Independence Measure and the Disability Rating Scale at discharge and at 1 year follow-up. In addition, the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended was also assessed at 1 year. Analysis of the data indicated that there were large differences in patient characteristics across these centers (demographics, TBI severity, and functional deficits at admission to rehabilitation). However, even after taking those factors into account, there were significant differences in functional outcomes of patients treated at different TBIMS centers. The authors conclude that these findings may be related to differences in institutional structures, resources, and clinical practices between centers.
