Abstract:

Article identifies factors associated with specific categories of charges during acute inpatient rehabilitation treatment after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Average daily charges were obtained and analyzed from the final billing for 84 patients for the following categories of resource use: room and board, rehabilitation therapy, functional laboratories, respiratory, radiology studies, medical laboratory, medical/surgical supplies, pharmacy, short procedures, and miscellaneous. Room and board and rehabilitation therapy accounted for almost 90 percent of the average daily charges. Functional status at admission correlated with charges for respiratory, medical, and surgical supplies and with pharmacy and radiology, but not the other categories. Further research is needed to identify resource use that is included in room and board charges.
