Abstract:

Article presenting results of 2 studies related to impaired awareness of the effects of brain injury in persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The first study compared the self-ratings of 64 TBI patients to ratings by family members, in order to test the hypothesis that TBI patients would report less impairment than their family members. The second study (with 47 different participants) compared different ways of measuring impaired awareness: patient-family comparison, patient-clinician comparison, and clinician rating of patients' accuracy of self-appraisal. It was found that family and clinician ratings in the areas of physical and community functioning correlated more than either did with patient self-ratings, but in the areas of cognitive and behavioral functioning families were closer to patients than they were to clinicians.
