Abstract:

Article on possible risk factors that may predispose individuals to violent traumatic brain injury (TBI), and on the effect of violent etiology on TBI outcome. Data are from 812 individuals treated for TBI between 3/89 and 9/96 at four TBI Model Systems. It was found that survivors of violent and onviolent TBI have similar functional outcomes, but that they differ in pre-injury and post-injury socioeconomic characteristics, injury severity, and post-injury community integration. Socioeconomic factors appear to play a large role in the risk for violent injury and in community integration following injury.
