Abstract:

The utility of the Useful Field of View (UFOV) test as a measure of attention in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) was examined by comparing the UFOV test results with those of conventional neuropsychological tests. The UFOV provides a measure of focused and divided visual attention under varying levels of task demand. Outcome measures for the 15 participants undergoing inpatient rehabilitation included the UFOV test, the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) instrument, length of stay (LOS), and standard neuropsychological testing. Results showed that the patient's admission FIM score and the divided visual attention score both correlated significantly with 2 outcome measures: FIM change and LOS. Findings suggest that the UFOV test reliably determines how well patients with ABI can divide their visual attention and is more easily administered and scored than other measures of attention and divided attention.
