This is a part of podcast series from the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center discussing emotional challenges after a traumatic burn injury (TBI). In this segment, Dr. Flora Hammond discusses recognizing emotions after TBI.
One of the treatments that we've developed, this was led by Dr. Dawn Neumann, is the ability to recognize emotions in others and what they're communicating. What we found is that when people are sad, for example, people often misinterpret that as being angry. You can imagine what happens when you think someone's angry, but they're actually sad, and so your reaction to them instead of being empathy is getting irritable with them. And so Dr. Neumann's treatment has helped address identifying other people's facial effects and trying to respond appropriately. Once we've identified that.
