Abstract:
Study examined the quality of life (QOL) and experiences with caregiving among people using long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) compared to patients with tetraplegic spinal cord injury (SCI) not using LTMV. QOL was conceptualized in 3 distinct ways: health-related QOL, global cognitive appraisal, and individualized/judgmental. Caregiving was assessed in terms of the intensity and quality of the caregiving relationship. No significant differences in QOL were observed between the 2 groups. Differences in caregiving were found, and caregiving was associated with cognitively appraised QOL.
