Abstract:

Self-directed learning module on the definition and diagnosis of acute, subacute, and chronic pain. This article is part of the chapter on pain in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Topics include: defining acute, subacute, and chronic pain; subtype diagnoses; differentiation of pain generators; cost-effectiveness of diagnostic testing; and the minimum data set necessary prior to treatment.
