Abstract:

Study comparing demographics, injury characteristics, and functional outcomes of individuals with neoplastic spinal cord compression and those with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Data are from a prospective 5-year comparison of 34 individuals with neoplastic spinal cord compression and 159 individuals with SCI. It was found that participants with neoplastic spinal cord compression were older, more often female, more often unemployed, more often had paraplegia involving the thoracic spine, and more often had incomplete injuries. Their rehabilitation length of stay (LOS) was shorter and their FIM change scores were lower. However, FIM efficiencies and discharge to home rates of the 2 groups were similar.
