Abstract:

Article discusses the incidence and management of associated medical issues in individuals with violence-related spinal cord injury. Penetrating wounds carry a heavy prognosis, and coexisting injuries along with post-traumatic complications increase the likelihood of morbidity and mortality. Changes in prehospital management, emergency department, and acute hospital care are discussed. Several factors play an important role in determining early treatment priorities. A systems approach, utilizing a specialized health care group consisting of physicians, nurses, therapists, and other health care specialists, is advocated to provide for the continuum of care throughout the life of the individual with SCI.
