Study examined the long-term relationship between physical capacity and manual wheelchair skill performance in patients with spinal cord injury during inpatient rehabilitation. Subjects were measured 3 times: at the start of active rehabilitation, 3 months later, and at discharge. Parameters of physical capacity were upper-extremity muscle strength (assessed by manual muscle testing), peak oxygen uptake, and peak power output. The Wheelchair Circuit was used to assess manual wheelchair skill performance. It consists of 8 standard tasks and results in 3 scores: ability, performance, and physical strain. Analysis revealed that peak power output was related to all 3 scores of the Wheelchair Circuit and the manual muscle testing sum score was related to the ability score and the performance time score. Subjects with higher peak power output and/or manual muscle testing sum scores had better scores on the Wheelchair Circuit than subject with lower values.
