Abstract:

Study examined the impact of a-blockers on the upper urinary tracts in men with spinal cord injury (SCI) who used reflex voiding for bladder management. Part 1 of the study evaluated the effectiveness of a1-blockers on upper tract stasis. Part 2 of the study evaluated the effectiveness of a1-blockers on urodynamic parameters in men with and without resolution of stasis. Urodynamic parameters evaluated included mean changes in opening pressure, maximum detrusor voiding pressure, and duration of uninhibited contraction. Results showed that a-blockade therapy was effective in resolving upper tract stasis in 8 of the 10 men. The only urodynamic parameter that significantly changed in those with resolution of stasis was the duration of uninhibited contractions.
