Abstract:

Article about the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal perforations in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Data are from a retrospective review of the records of 33 patients admitted for rehabilitation from 1975 to 1995 who had complications of esophegeal injury. A table shows, for each of the 33 patients, data about the patient's SCI, the method of diagnosing the esophageal injury, the diagnosis made, and the primary patient complaint. Difficulties of diagnosis are discussed, along with factors supporting a suspicion of esophageal injury (injury factors, signs and symptoms, and diagnostic workup). Medical and surgical interventions are listed.
