Dr. Mclain is a board-certified physiatrist who has been involved in research and clinical care activities since 1978. She is a tenured Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and holds an endowed Chair position. She is the founder and Director of the nation's first Women's Clinic for the Disabled located at the Spain Rehabilitation Center, and has served on the NIH Committee for Health of Women with Disabilities. She has held the positions of President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA). She has been a member of the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine whose mission was to develop clinical practice guidelines for women with SCI. She has been a member of the International SCI Society scientific committee and council. She has published a number of research studies in peer-reviewed journals and has served as a reviewer for Spinal Cord, JSCM, and Archives of PM&R. Dr. McLain served as the national principal investigator for Sanofi-Aventis’ international phase II study on the use of HP184, and her outcome measurement instrument, the UABIMR, was used in that study. Over the past 20 years, she has participated in eleven industry-sponsored clinical trials in SCI related areas. She has been Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for the UAB-SCIMS for the past 20 years and continues to maintain an active clinical practice.
