Dr. Shafi is a trauma surgeon and health services researcher with Baylor Health Care System (BHCS). He previously served as the Director of Research at Baylor Rehabilitation Institute, Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Assistant Professor (Adjunct), School of Public Health, University of Texas at Houston – Dallas Regional Campus, and Medical Director of Trauma Surgical Services at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, TX. His primary research interests and experience include measuring performance of trauma centers using risk-adjusted patient outcomes and identifying mechanisms underlying variation in performance across trauma centers. His prior research grants include an R01 from AHRQ to measure the association between structural characteristics of trauma centers and their patient outcomes as well as one from the National Trauma Institute (funded by the Department of Defense) on measuring compliance with evidence-based guidelines at trauma centers. He has considerable experience in conducting multicenter studies, and has presented and published several papers related to quality improvement at trauma centers. He is the founding member of the Trauma Quality Improvement Project (TQIP) of the American College of Surgeons. In this role he was involved with development and national roll out of risk-adjusted benchmarking of all trauma centers in the country. He also served on the board of directors of EAST (Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma) and currently chairs the committee on Injury Assessment and Outcome measurement for AAST (American Association for the Surgery of Trauma).
