Abstract:

Article presents strategies for improvements in clinical care and establishes research priorities in traumatic brain injury (TBI). It aims to provide a foundation for implementation of policy measures that minimize the risk of TBI and maximize chances of recovery when it does happen. The authors highlight priorities and provides expert recommendations for all stakeholders—policy makers, funders, health-care professionals, researchers, and patient representatives—on clinical and research strategies to improve the lives of people with TBI. This manuscript represents the efforts of a consortium of leading health-care professionals, all of whom are involved in the International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research (InTBIR) studies, with input provided by other collaborating specialists and, crucially, by patients. The authors cover a range of topics that need to be addressed to confront the global burden of TBI and reduce its effects on individuals and society: epidemiology, health economics, prevention, systems of care, clinical management, characterization of TBI, outcome assessment, prognosis, and new directions for acquiring and implementing evidence
