Abstract:
Article discusses the ethical and legal implications of the use of cell phones by patients with brain injury during inpatient rehabilitation. The first author outlines issues in the context of wireless device use in the hospital, and more specifically for those with cognitive impairment. The second author shares a case that highlights the complexities of cell phone use and restriction and offers practical advice for addressing the associated concerns. The third author underscores the heterogeneity of brain injury and considers the pros and cons of cell phone use in patients with brain injury. Finally, the fourth author draws on her legal background to suggest a phase-in approach for cell phone use on brain injury units.
