Abstract:
The ability to improve disaster response preparedness and processes relies heavily on the highly practical and necessary but flawed concept of “lessons learned”. However, in order to further evaluate preparedness, improve processes for response and properly allocate resources for rehabilitation and recovery after disasters, patient-centric longitudinal assessment measures are needed. This article calls for the burn care community to establish patient-centered common data elements that tie the long-term consequences of this injury to the early medical response to disaster situations as well as standard care. Establishment of a database of reliable, valid information will allow objective data to drive optimization of burn care, disaster preparedness and all phases of disaster response and build on lessons learned.
