Abstract:

This is the first installment of a three-part series exploring the stress response to severe burn trauma. This article reviews the current literature pertaining to the pathophysiological stress response to burn trauma, and the leading therapies to mitigate this response. Focus will be placed on recent advances that have come to light in the last decade, as well as important knowledge gaps that need to be pursued in order to develop novel therapeutic strategies which improve outcomes in burn survivors. In particular, discussion focuses on three major metabolic consequences of severe burn trauma: hypermetabolism, muscle wasting, and stress induced diabetes.
