Abstract:

Panel session remarks on quality assurance (QA) programs in relation to burn treatment. In addition to the traditional objective measures, burn care QA should include measures of patient quality of life. Measuring QA will require more data, and for this a national burn registry would be a major step in the right direction. Critical pathways, roadmaps of a standard course of treatment, can be used to measure quality of care, but they are easier to define than to apply to particular institutions or cases, which differ greatly. Because of these difficulties in defining and applying QA to burn cases, the author opposes specific QA mandates from the American Burn Association.
