This is a part of the podcast series from the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center on Returning to School After Burn Injury. Haig Yenikomshian discusses some burn scar complications that families and schools should be aware of with students who have burn injuries.

Complications that schools and parents should look out for: sometimes the burn scars can open up, which means that they can get an open wound, like a scabbed knee, and that they might need some wound care. That's something that the burn center can treat easily. And if you just call us, we'll either bring you in and take care of it or can even do it over the phone. As kids get older, sometimes their scars can get thick and they can pull, especially around the hand and the neck. And that's something as a reconstructive plastic surgeon, I would like to see so that we can discuss reconstructive options in the future.
