Alexis Brown’s Burn Injury Journey

Alexis Brown became a Burn Nurse in October of 2022 at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Toledo, OH. Her patients were mainly Burn or Trauma patients facing the worst day of their lives. She came to the unit with an open mind to learn new nursing skills and enhance her education; what she learned was burn patients require more than just knowledge and skills-they need compassion and a calming ear. Alexis learned that the level of care for patients is not just superficial, there’s a large mental element involved with the patient and the family. A patient doesn’t only need pain medications, often they just need to talk about what happened.

Alexis has utilized the MSKTC resources to help educate her patients. MSKTC offers resources to burn victims and their families so they can understand how to adjust to a new life knowing that they are not alone.

What does Alexis think of the quality, usefulness, and user-friendliness of the MSKTC resources?

The quality of the MSKTC resources is exceptional, well studied, and show no bias. MSKTC has more resources than one would expect and touches on subjects that even people working with burn patients wouldn’t consider. The vast subjects covered by MSKTC remind one that a burn injury is more than just what happens in the hospital, it is for life.

The MSKTC resources are useful because they provide information that one does not think of - the long-term effects. It hits on every subject one can imagine including “how to approach children” and “how to be intimate.” These are important elements to going back to a normal day-to-day life and by providing these resources early in treatment a person can be prepared for it in the future.

The user-friendliness of the MSKTC resources is well rounded and shows great evidence that they understand that people have different learning styles. Having access to not just documents but also photos, videos, and infographics while serving a lower education community ensures that Alexis can be sure that all her patients are getting the knowledge they deserve. The website itself is easy to navigate so people of all skills can reach the resources available.

Why does Alexis Brown want to be an MSKTC ambassador?

Alexis wants to become an ambassador because she has firsthand witnessed the lack of resources and knowledge available to people with burn injuries. MSKTC offers comfort through knowledge. People face challenges better when they know what difficulties to expect, and MSKTC provides that. If Alexis can offer peace of mind through resources and education, then she is eager to jump at that opportunity. She advocates well-rounded and holistic care when it comes to healthcare and will proudly represent MSKTC as an ambassador.

What has Alexis Brown done as a MSKTC ambassador?

Alexis has merged several MSKTC resources to create a Burn Education Book that is provided to patients and families when they are admitted to the unit. This book provides information on what to expect while admitted, goes into depth about the physiology of burns, data on burns, and what to expect in the future. She is currently working with administrators on redeveloping their burn unit, so it is better utilized as a resource for their communities.
